Is an expatriate Scot who has been a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist in the Principal Treatment Centre for the North of England in Newcastle for more than 20 years. His primary clinical practice is in solid tumours with a particular interest in sarcoma and especially osteosarcoma. He is a longstanding core member of the North of England Bone and Soft Tissue MDT and he is a leading figure in Work-packages 2,3 and 4 of the European Osteosarcoma FOSTER group.
He is passionate about clinical research, what it has achieved and what it can achieve.
In the last 15 years he has been Chief Investigator for 5 studies and principal investigator for 21 more. He developed an Early Phase trials Service in Newcastle and then a network for trials for the North of Britain including Scotland and Northern Ireland. He is the director of the NIHR Paediatric Clinical research Facility in Newcastle. Since its inception he has been a steering committee member for the UK Experimental Cancer Medicines Centres Paediatric Network. He is the current chair of the United Kingdom Collaborative for Cancer Research Children and Young Peoples New Agent Group. He also sits on the solid tumour steering committee of the European ITCC and is active within the Accelerate Platform. In his youth he worked twice in Brisbane first at the Mater and then Brisbane Children’s hospital.
